all things contemporary amsterdam I

It has been a while since my last post. I have been silent but quite busy with some new works (to be added), loads of visual research, freelance work, serving on a fantastic arts jury for Ontario Arts Council, spending a month in the Netherlands and everything in between except social media.

I thought it is best to resume where I left off by sharing some artsy highlights of my trip.

1. Stedelijk

I have been to Amsterdam many times and never seem to be getting enough of it. There is never enough time to absorb all the great art that’s available. This time I turned my focuse from the masters to everything contemporary starting with Stedelijk Museum. The architecture of the museum (boat or kitchen sink?) and the logo are quite eye catching. I had heard about the discontent over the museum’s new logo but I actually loved the design and I think it is  pretty ingenious as it spells out the name of the museum in one single letter. minimal, distinct and modern.

Besides the great historical and contemporary works of art and the breathtaking Matisse, I particularly enjoyed the astonishing collection of posters, catalogues and the iconic dutch graphic design archives including works of Wim Crouwel, one of 20th century’s most important designers and the founder of Total Design. Some of these 50’s and 60’s posters are simply timeless, as are the Scandinavian century modern furniture and objects. I would like to go back for a more focused research.

2. political/social art installation

On a walk around Artis on a rainy day, I spotted this miniature figure and thought maybe someone had dropped it, then I saw them scattered around on random benches, fountains and sidewalks. It instantly reminded me of little people by Slinkachu and I was excited to have stumbled upon such an art installation but looking closer it became obvious that this was a response to the Syrian refugee crisis. I found out the installation #MovingPeople was a guerilla art project organized by  Power of Art House, an artistic think tank consisting of designers, socio-cultural entrepreneurs, producers, and other creative thinkers who distributed 10010 miniature refugees in the city. You were supposed to move them and share their stories via social media and they were actually 3D scans of former refugees ( I read about this later). Subtle yet powerful and capturing.

3. gallery hopping

the most memorable of my gallery-hopping in Amsterdam were the works of Claire Harvey at Galerie Fons Welters. In her postcard series you see these folks on the wing of planes in various states of being.  I loved the angle and how she took me with her into the clouds. Her imagination is etched in my mind, now whenever I get that same view on the plane, I picture myself sitting on that wing, dangling my feet looking through the clouds down to the earth. The other part of this exhibition were these miniature swirls of figures hand drawn on the gallery wall which looked like dots from the distance.  I found myself captured by their movement and was curious to know where they were going. This show is until October 17th (if you are in Amsterdam.)

Thank you SKETCH

Yesterday I was invited to participate in the Artist Talk series for SKETCH. SKETCH is a fantastic and essential organization that provides creative training initiatives for street-involved, homeless and at-risk youth. Their programs are truly amazing and they cover anything from visual arts, creative movement, textile art, music recording as well as culinary and environmental arts. And all this happens at their cool space in the creative hob of Artscape Young Centre. It was an honour to have the opportunity to share my experience and my work with this group of brilliant participants and hear their responses.

I also collected the sketch below from an emerging artist who was smart enough to have his work available for sale and promote it! Keep up the good work Gaetan Genesse!

one-piece wonders II

Below are the images of the rest of one-piece wonders (working title). I am working on a few more of these and I am gradually expanding them and playing around to see what come out of them. One thing for sure is that I am really into metallics and sequin now.

For now take a look at these. They are also listed on my store.  More to follow in the coming weeks.

thank you for the old year

It is the old new year today. So this is the best chance to send you my be-lated new year wishes. But first, let me thank you for the old year.

25 works of mine found themselves new loving homes in the past year. The majority of it happened during a modest 4-hour studio sale. It was a record-breaking event for me and pleasantly unexpected. I am still stoked.

Last year, I focused my energy on re-building my online portfolio. In between launching a new website, a new logo, a blog, an online storecool art rentals, and this newsletter to keep in touch with you, there was not much time for shows and art fairs to disseminate my work. However, I had the most increase in new viewers, feedbacks and sales of my work over the years.

So I have only you to thank for this great success. I owe my elevated enthusiasm to continue creating new works to your support and appreciation.

Artistically I have been toying with “less is more”. I would say last year has been more about explorations, studies, sketches and developing new different series which I will tell you about briefly today and in the months to come. I am very excited about the new developments and the new direction that is gradually emerging, although unknown to me.

Thanks for letting me share my thoughts and my works with you. Please continue visiting my website for events, new works and blog posts. Bring along friends too.

I can not possibly add to all the best wishes you have already received from everyone around you, but I too, wish you a colourful, joyful and an artsy year ahead.

Happy 2015!

one-piece wonders

Here are the first pieces of the new series I  have been working on.

They are very different from what I have been doing in many aspects. In most of my previous works, I have used a lot of color and I have been drawn to meticulous and elaborate collage work where at times I have used hundreds of cut-outs in one piece.

For these works I am using only one colour, heavy layers of black paint, and one focal cut-out. I highlight a carefully-chosen college pieces that has intricate and high definition texture to create a visual illusion of detailed hand-painted element. The medium is oil on wood panel. The cut-outs are still from fashion editorials. They are also studies for larger scale works. I am contemplating to blow up the scale and see what happens.

For now I am call them ‘one-piece wonders‘.

summer is long gone

It is definitely not summer anymore. no kidding! But I haven’t posted anything about the works I finished back then.

Here they are the sibling, “gentle” works I was working on a while back.  Their summery,  bright and fresh colour pallet makes them almost out of place for this dreary, grey November day or on the contrary, their soft glow-in-the-dark look is the most needed visual break . I think more of the latter, not that these paintings are seasonal!

Here is pleasantly idle ! For this, I left a lot of silent, quiet space on the top with very subtle variations of paint where I enjoy relaxing my eyes on and focusing on the soft layers and silky textures. The collage work somehow reminds me dangling thoughts, unfinished ideas, graceful limbs dancing gently in the air. There is a sense of confident disconnect and idleness in this state of suspense.

IMG_4802

Remember this work that I had doubts about its “finished” state. well,  I went back and tweaked it with some minor paint application and few more collage pieces. I don’t know whether it was for better or worse. You be the the judge. It does look more finished to me. And if I still have doubts, I can’t go back to it anymore or I will wreck the whole thing.

The piece is titled the world is your oyster. It is believed in feng shui, turquoise, the stone, is used to attract money and wealth!  I didn’t know this fact when I was combining pearls, jewels and lush shiny cut-puts with turquoise and aqua tones. I believe my spirit was dwelling on the sea bed, searching for pearls of wisdom and inspiration all in one big giant oyster. So it turns out this work ,hung in the right place, is destined to bring you wealth and fortune, without breaking the bank ;-).

the very first online sale

I had a personal record-breaking  sale at my studio yesterday with 17 pieces leaving me for new homes within a mere 4-hour period. I am still dizzy about it and very happy. Thanks to all of you who came, brought friends and made this a huge success. I can now focus more on the new series that I am developing with much more enthusiasm, encouragement and of course space! I am very grateful to you.  As promised,  I am hosting my very first online sale out of my store for my out-of-town, out-of-country but not-out-of-mind friends and supporters.

expectations were met at Great Expectations

If you are in Toronto and you get a chance, check out Graham Gillmore‘s Great Expectations at the spectacular Division Gallery.

Once in while, I see works that I get a strong visceral reaction to and  feel an invisible pull towards them. I can’t quite describe it. It’s a sort of feeling I have towards certain style of contemporary dance. Usually there is this sense of abstract movement or a kinetic energy as well as a sense of architecture and other elements that create this strong connection for me. It is expected and obvious in dance but not so much in two dimensional works. Hardly I have seen these two art forms being compared to each other. It is not often that I myself perceive such a connection.

The above show where I discovered the works of internationally acclaimed Graham Gilmore for the first time was one of those. Everything about these text based paintings, from the vivid colour palettes, textures, texts, meaning and their ambiguity translates in a beautiful abstract dance. Obviously, I am not an art critic so I just describe my own feelings and connection to the work and I leave the description to the artist and the critique to the experts.

These two pieces below were my most favourite. The images don’t do justice as I snapped them with my phone so go and see the real thing for yourself and check out the artist or gallery’s website for better images.

it’s all about shopping now!

Insert drum roll and ribbon cutting ceremony here! I am announcing the official opening of my very own on-line store.

I can’t tell you how exciting it has been to set this up. It is a full-on store with all the fancy and top-notch e-commerce capabilities out there. I will be adding more small scale and affordable options to serve all sorts of budgets. I will be having online sales and I am also planning to have occasional giveaways. Yes, you heard it right! Just stay tuned.

I will continue using Saatchi Art as an excellent on-line gallery and for sales outside my personal network. However, running my own store offers more flexibility and direct relationship with my network both locally and internationally. It also allows me to accommodate price negotiation requests. After all, I am Iranian and all about a good old chooneh zani (bazaar-style bargaining!)
