I had used the same pieces below in 2011 in my atlantis painting and it was interesting to stumble upon the same images (from a Prada editorial) in a old Vogue again and use them entirely differently. Looking at that painting and these works on paper, makes me realize how much my work has changed during this year-long collage on paper challenge. I have come from meticulous collage work, dense and busy compositions and colourful palettes to these minimal and focused works on paper. I still consider this current body of work more of a study and research. However I know despite my previous longings for going back to canvas and paint, I know that I won’t at least for a while! I think I am drawn more and more to the intimate feel of paper and I want to expand on these works and embark on another set of research. Completely different ideas have started brewing in my head since subtle fragments exhibition and I know they will surface one of these day. Enough of me being so vague….
As it is the story these days with me I am running behind posting my works (not making them…) so I will post week 41 shortly to catch up with myself.
I was doubting the composition of the first piece but there is something about its angle and its sense of movement that I liked so I kept it. These pieces and last week’s are once again creature like and I have responded to the texture with tiny filaments. The last pieces is a continuation of my stitching work. All good fun!
I am running behind again. As you know I was busy with the show last week which was great by the way and I will tell you about it when I get a chance. Here are the pieces from last week. Week 38 and Week 39 are mostly fragments of one piece so they work well together.
My love affair with Chanel continues. These are also from the same spread as last week‘s. These guys are very gentle on paper. I love their vibe, calmness and subtlety. I had a hard time capturing their true colours in pictures so in person they have more personality (as we all do). I might bring them to the show this week at Propeller Gallery. They fit perfectly with the theme of subtle fragments.
God bless Chanel 😀. I found a gorgeous spread in Vogue UK featuring a beautiful Chanel outfit and I had to have it. Ripped into pieces of course and what you see is the outcome! Playful, subtle drawing enhancements and simple compositions. Just how I like it. And this is how I wear Chanel!
Happy long weekend everyone. I am quite happy with the set for this week as I got to spend longer time on time. I found very interesting patterns and shapes that called for very subtle drawings. As you know I can’t ever get enough of black & white.
I will be showcasing a few of my collages on paper in a two-artist exhibition, subtle fragments, with Helen Liene Dreifelds, a fascinating textile artist, at Propeller Gallery (30 Abell Street – Queen & Galdstone area) from September 19th to 25th. The reception is on Saturday, September 24th from 2-5 pm.
A while back, Frances Patella, co-Chair of Propeller Gallery invited us to showcase our work together as she had spotted a dialogue between our creations.
I had came across Helen’s work last year at the Artist Project and it was love at first sight. I haven’t stopped admiring her intricate and contemporary textile creations since. Her pieces and installations are extremely thoughtful and meticulous yet they seem effortless, airy and very dreamy!
The idea of a joint show was definitely a surprise for me. My work is essentially about the characteristics of textile in an abstract form and quite out of context. I had never thought about the juxtaposition with actual textile work. So obviously I am very excited to see how this juxtaposition unfolds.
This exhibition is about our shared interest in referencing textiles with our individual techniques and practices and our joint fascination with folds, creases and draping. There are shared moments of unravelling and unfinishedness.
It is a new experience for me to look at my pieces in relation to another artist’s work. It is a different lense and a learning process. I have picked a few of the collages that are truly subtle – very simple fragments.
Thank you Frances for your insight and for creating this opportunity for us! I am very much looking forward to see how this connection between our works translates into the physical space.

Textiles are coded material, a living language and archive. subtle fragmentsbrings together the work of two emerging artists working with and referencing textiles. A mutual preoccupation with draping and folds is explored through a range of processes: assembling, collage, layering, weaving and drawing. The result is a series of meticulous records that appear to be in various states of beginning, unravelling.
The set for last week’s challenge are all lacy cut-outs. I felt like I messed them up but I had to post them anyways. I keep tellin you about my recurring itch to shake things up a bit. But it has been an insane summer and coming up with new ideas and keeping up with the imposed weekly challenge was challenging! I think I told you that I was working on the 55th edition of Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition . So my excuse had been that I have been surrounded by fabulous art and not much time left to focus on my own. I have been meaning to write a post on my favourite works from the show but I never got to it. In September I will have enough time to show you the pieces I acquired for my very first art collection.
And by the way, I have a show coming up at Propeller Gallery with my all time favourite fiber artist Helen Liene Dreifelds. September 19 – 25, 2016. More details in the next post! I am super excited!
